With lawyers, health-care workers, judges, businessmen, government workers, ministers, educators,
ALL KINDS of WORK –
ethical standards protect us all and protect our government:
- prevent lots of bad behavior;
- remove the excuse of “I was only following orders.”
Nazi businesses wanted slave or concentration camp labor. Lawyers oversaw mass executions. Accountants provided important help. Churches justified evil acts. Politicians acted as ordered.
When political leaders give evil directives, ethical standards become very important. “Ethics must guide us precisely when we are told that the situation is exceptional.”
If people “confuse their specific ethics with the emotions of the moment,” we can all be in serious trouble.
